Project Manager – Road Construction (New Zealand)

Our client has more than 80 years experience in the transport, water, energy, mining and land development infrastructure sector in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific and employed over 7000 people. The Company currently seeking to recruit Project Manager — to manage and lead project delivery of the Construction or Maintenance projects ensuring the profitable, compliant and efficient delivery of the works.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years relevant construction experience (including job and project management);
  • Working towards or holds relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical experience;
  • Competent users of Word, Excel and Project
  • Understanding of job pricing including materials, labour and plant and associated margin / profit calculations;
  • Familiar with NZS 3910, Construction Contracts Act, NEC Contracts, Working towards CCS training as Project Management tool;
  • Full clean Class 1 drivers licence.

  • Set project estimates for resource use and cost, manage the project to meet or exceed margins / profit. Ensure optimal operational efficiencies throughout all aspects of the project;
  • Review all financial information and carry out costs to completes for projects monthly. Ensure we meet and exceed budgets.

 

Subcontractor and Supplier Management:

  • Adopt the Company first focus and proactively source resources such as labour, plant and material internally first wherever possible;
  • Follow Company procedures for supplier and subcontractor management included preferred supplier / subcontractor agreements and ensure all paperwork is completed for set up and performance is audited as per procedures;
  • Highlight any performance issues with suppliers or subcontractors early and manage solutions;
  • Negotiate rates with suppliers / subcontractors where preferred agreements don’t exist or as appropriate to size and duration of project.

 

Lead and Champion Company Work Ethics within the Construction Division for all projects and activities:

  • Maintain open communication with staff and management;
  • Carry out monthly tailgates with staff;
  • Lead and champion Company best practices, work procedures, health and safety, environment and quality procedures, customer relationship management on all projects;
  • Carry out all health and safety audits required of managers and complete records;
  • Recruit and select new staff for the department with the assistance of the Construction Divisional Manager and HR advisor;
  • Participate in reviews and investigations for all incidents including health and safety, quality and environmental.

 

Lead the Project team to maximize performance of foreman /supervisors and crews:

  • Ensure staff are provided with leadership and guidance with co-ordination and monitoring of department projects and activities, including dissemination of relevant strategic and business vision;
  • Ensure staff are familiar with and motivated by the company’s mission statement and relevant policies;
  • Set up and maintain training records and plan for development of staff to enable them to perform their roles competently and effectively;
  • Set performance expectations with foreman / supervisors and crews. Monitor performance and address any issues with the assistance of the Construction Divisional Manager and HR Advisor.

 

Safety and Environmental:

  • Adequate resources are identified, provided and maintained to enable the Project to fully meet its SHE commitment requirements;
  • The effectiveness of the SQTE management systems are reviewed and any system improvements identified as a result of employee suggestions, accident/audit reports or tailgates are identified for consideration;
  • The development of Project SQTE goals, objectives and targets that are aligned to the Company Corporate Business Plan;
  • The Project complies in full with all the relevant Acts, Regulations, Codes and Guidelines that relate to the operations;
  • The Project complies in full with the requirements of the ACC Accredited Employer Programme at tertiary level and Operate Safe Accreditation;
  • All staff are given the opportunity to be involved in SQTE management in the Region/Project.

 

Quality from Start to Finish:

  • Implementation of the Company Quality Policy, direction and strategy as it applies to New Zealand Contracting.
  • Initiating, implementing and approving process improvement ideas and suggestions as a result of Customer feedback, employee suggestions for improvements, investigation of non-conforming items, TQM’s, Process Improvement Team suggestions and Tailgate ideas.
  • Ensuring that resource requirements are identified and the provision of adequate resources, including the assignment of trained personnel for management, performance of work and verification activities including internal audits.
